Pinoy Tapsilog

If you're a foreign tourist wanting to know what authentic breakfast in the Philippines is like, try having Tapsilog. Tapsilog is a famous Filipino term used when tapa, sinangag and itlog is combined into one meal usually served during breakfast.  Tapa is refered to as the dried beef, sinangang is a day old rice cooked fried in a wok with garlic while itlog is Tagalog word for egg.

Our First Elba Gas Range

Just a few weeks ago, mom and I scouted the mall looking for the perfect gas range fit for a big family like ours. Mom has always wanted to own one for we have been cooking using just a plain gas stove like since forever! Our La Germania Gas Stove did a really good job and it has served us long enough, but recently something happened (human error, actually) that forced us to buy a brand new stove.  Since Mom and I would love to try our hands on baking for the family (toaster won't do and our turbo broiler eats up much on electricity), we asked dad if we could buy a brand new Gas Range instead. Probably thinking that it would inspire us more to be in the kitchen regularly, he said yes and even insisted on buying the best quality. And so after checking out a line of gas ranges from Abenson, our eyes finally set on this stainless steel cooktop - the free standing Elba K 55x320 Gas Range.

We bought this gas range for a little less than Php30,000. We haven't used the oven though but we're looking forward to a great home-cook roasted chicken. Below are more detailed info about this particular Elba Gas Range:

Recipe: Misua Soup with Fried Meatballs

Monsoon season has already started here in the Philippines. I feel quite fortunate that I won't have to go drag myself outside and worry on possibly wearing the whole wet look drama just to report for work since work is already at home. Faced with loads of online tasks, Jing was kind enough to cook this warm cozy meal for our dinner. The rains hasn't stopped and it's bringing in cold chills in the house, this Misua Soup with Fried Meatballs is very much a delicious comfort meal to end a rainy cold day.

Snack of the Week: Manggang Hilaw with Bagoong

One of the best thing about being a Filipino is the abundance of this irresistible duo treat in the Philippines - Manggang hilaw and Bagoong (green/unripe mangoes with shrimp paste). Philippines has also been known to have the sweetest mangoes around - Guimaras mango, which is a variety of the popular Carabao Mango (Manginera indica). In 1995, the Guinness Book of World records listed the Carabao Mango as the sweetest fruit in the world. But we also love it's sour-y version which is the popular street food, the manggang hilaw.

Recipe: Cream Dory with Butter and Lemon

My first taste of cream dory (also called Pangasius) was during over lunch at Italianni's. I read that they're using the said fish on their Parmesan Crusted Fish Fillet. At that time, I was yearning to cook using cream dory but was having a hard time looking for one in the market so I'm always buying another fish fillet called labahita, a good alternative too I should say. But good thing it's much easier now to find frozen packets of cream dory fillets thus more reason for me to experiment with different recipes.

Magnolia Chicken Station's Pesto Chicken Fingers

I've once posted my homemade chicken fingers in this blog which I find relatively easy to do. I would also make Chicken Schnitzel once in a while. But during our last visit at the grocery store, mom and I got interested on a particular chicken cut in the Magnolia Chicken Station booth, the ready made Pesto Chicken Fingers. What got us into thinking is we saw no green color on its coating (I made a lot of pan fried versions mixing basil into the breadcrumbs). And so I asked the person in charge and he said the chicken has already been marinated with the basil and coated with parmesan cheese etc. Curious as to how it would taste, we bought half a kilo, just to try.

Making Korea's Egg Cake

After attending the recent Manila Food and Beverage Expo, I want to share this one cool food discovery from the said event - Korea's Egg Cake.
This is one of the booths that caught my curiosity as I saw groups of people watching this Korean man. What could he be cooking? After watching him for a minute and having read what was posted below, I realized he was making an Egg Cake. I find the process quite amazing, reminding me of mooncakes. Simple, really, but since it's something beyond the usual cooking method that most of us do back home and in fact something I haven't seen even on TV before, this Egg Cake is pretty much surprising!

Recipe: Cheesy Fish Fillet

During one of the cooking demo in the recent foodie event (Manila Food and Beverage Expo) I attended, I got to see up close how Chef Kat Jao of Yummy Magazine worked on this yummy dish - Cheesy Fish Fillet. I've actually cooked a couple of recipes using cream dory as the main ingredient. It's one of my fave fish fillets and they're mostly cooked pan fried. So when I saw the whole cooking process, I said to myself, "Geez, this is so easy to make!" And having tasted Chef Kat's dish, I couldn't get over it. So with a copy of the said recipe at hand, it was the dinner dish I served my family the following day and boy they loved it!

MOA Dinner at A Veneto Pizzeria Ristorante

I already said in my previous post how much I love dining at A Veneto Pizzeria Ristorante. I even tried making one of their best sellers at home, the Nut Pesto with Chicken (the McCormick way). But I know nothing beats the original. And the photo below my friends is the real Nut Pesto with Chicken

A Veneto's Nut Pesto with Chicken
After my solo "food trip" at MAFBEX 2011, I met up with my friend MC and off we went to SM Mall of Asia for some good talk and good food.

Adobong Hito

Adobo is a popular dish and and at the same time a cooking process in Philippine cuisine that involves meat or seafood marinated in a sauce of vinegar and garlic, browned in oil, and simmered in the marinade. This version however presents that fish like Pantat or Hito (Catfish in english) can also be cooked Adobo inspired.

Famous Durian Tart from Mindanao

I've written here before about mom's undying love for durian. And although I'm not much fan of its fruit per se, I've always love munching its candy bar and durian tart version. Last week, another relative from Mindanao bought large pouches of little golden durian tarts. This time free from that uncanny smell, lol! Sweet eats!
