2012 Best Cookbook - Dinner: A Love Story

A cookbook for harried parents that aims to enable families to eat dinner together every night is being touted as the one of the best food books of the year so far.

Written by an editor of food magazines like Bon Appétit and major publications like Real Simple and Martha Stewart Living, Dinner: A Love Story by Jenny Rosenstrach has been tapped as the best cookery book of 2012 so far by editors of Amazon.com. The book contains 120 recipes meant to cover major milestones in life that can throw a wrench in everyday routines like the ‘Just-Married Stage' and the ‘New Parents Stage.'

Born out of a 14-year-old food diary in which Rosenstrach documented every meal she cooked and ate, DALS -- as she calls the book and blog of the same name -- provides strategies on how to break down the prep, cleanup and timing in order to be able to sit down to a home-cooked meal with the kids every night.

The book was also born out of a deal Rosenstratch made to herself when she became a new mother in 2002: that she would only continue to work full time as an editor if she could put a meal on the table, she says.

Dishes in the book are recipes that have been prepared and served in her own home, she says, like homemade chicken nuggets, Thai-style salmon and pappardelle with pork ragu.

Other cookbooks chosen by Amazon editors as being the best of 2012 so far include celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson's Yes, Chef: A Memoir, which is also a bestseller at Barnes & Noble, The Homemade Pantry: 101 Foods You Can Stop Buying and Start Making by Alana Chernila and Cheryl Day's The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook.

Popular food titles this year from Barnes & Noble include The Crockin' Girls Slow Cookin' Companion: Yummy Recipes from Family, Friends, and our Crockin' Community by Nicole Sparks and Jenna Marwitz, and Michelle Obama's American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America.
